Spring madness....

Well the 3rd deadline has come, and I did not have all the money for it! I only barely covered the first 1000$ from the 2nd deadline. The 3000$ is due by April 38th. I know from past experience that I will not have those funds by then. Hopefully May fund raising will cover that though.

Recently I've put on two concerts, two weekends in a row. The first was a heavy metal concert which had 32 attendees and made about 150$ after expenses. The second concert was a variety show with music from reggae/hip-hop, to jazz, to Celtic this show made about 88$ profit.

I have been receiving donations from various family members and businesses which is helpful. Not as many businesses as I would like are sending in donations, it is very hard to get into contact with them.

For next month I hope to have a spaghetti dinner and a pub crawl, but things could change. For may I am trying to book the famous hypnotist Ian Stewart which will take a lot of help.

As for media relations, so far I have done an interview with a campus paper, a Catholic paper, an interview for a press release from St. Thomas University, and an interview with a journalism student which will go on campus radio! Local papers are very stubborn and hard to get a hold of for interviews.

That is all the major events of the past two months thus far!
See ya,
Marylynn

Fundraising worries....

Good read about sponsorship relationships with companies. http://www.charityvillage.com/cv/research/rspon14.html

So, last night was my first event. It was a movie marathon that went from 6:30 to 1am. We showed Little Nicky, Chicago, and Step Up. Made only about 40$ due to poor advertising. The people who did come had fun though! I now have a huge industrial sized garbage bag of popcorn sitting in my living room. Jumbo Video had donated the popcorn, and three movies rentals.

Since my deadlines are approaching fast I am worried about getting the money in time. But I feel confident that with the new people I've met I can do it.

My MP, Andy Scott's office mailed me a package with pins and flags etc to give away in Guyana and I've asked the city of Charlottetown, Fredericton, and the province of PEI too. Last bit of news is that I got a 350$ academic award from my Student Union.

That is all for now,
Marylynn

Well, it's January now and my fund raising campaign is somewhat underway. Since I was only notified during the Christmas break, there have been a lot of delays. I did one set of appeal letters already, but I need to start a new one soon.

I've been in contact with my school's Student Union and they are going to be helping me out with applying for a grant/ support. They may also help me draw people to my fundraisers.

Currently I'm having a movie marathon, and am still in the process of trying to get a charity show and bake sale going.

It's very tough going, I'm not at all getting the support I had intended, and the faculty strike at St. Thomas University isn't helping me at all. Once people know I exist, things may get easier.

Still doing a lot of research, planning, etc. Recently read a really good book called "Savage Interlude" by John B. Beckett. He and another fellow decided to go on a trip to Guyana in 1968 to look for gold and diamonds. Even though they prepared for the worst, everything went wrong! I couldn't stop reading it, it was so good! For being so antiquated (40 years now), it seems pretty accurate for what dangers you'd face in the "bush" of Guyana.

Dear readers,
Well I just found out a few days ago that I have been selected to go to Guyana in June 2008! It's very exciting, but at the same time overwhelming. I have started already with letters of appeal to family and friends, I've contacted newspapers asking them if they are interested in my story, and I've contacted a few politicians to get letters of support. In my first week I've already received a pledge of 100$! Hopefully things will continue to go well and I can start planning a fund raising event. It's going to be hard, but I know I can do it with the help I have.
Ciao!
Marylynn
